Most Wanted by KC Youth: Role models who are willing to give their time, talent and love to help them achieve their potential.
That’s me! And I hope it’s you, too. I’m an official MOST WANTED honoree for Big Brothers Big Sisters of Kansas City this year. That means I’m putting together an awesome auction package to raise money for this amazing organization. If my plans work out, auction attendees will be bidding on a once-in-a-lifetime adventure. I’m hoping that helping someone achieve a big bucket-list goal will fetch significant dollars for this charity that has won my heart.
Our community needs BBBS
Potential is everywhere. We don’t have to create it — we just have to defend it. BBBSKC relies on staff, amazing volunteer mentors and donors just like you to support over 1,300 Big and Little friendships in our community. When matched with a Big, 99% of Little Brothers and Sisters in Kansas City graduate high school on time, and 84% report improved self-esteem.
Right now, more than 300 Littles are waiting for a Big. I’m working to reach my fundraising goal so these kids can be matched with a positive, caring mentor. It takes $250 to recruit a Big and $1,500 to support a match for a year.
Why I’m doing this
I have been around Big Brothers Big Sisters for several years. I have friends who are Bigs and friends on the board. Participating as a Most Wanted honoree felt like a great way to support their work. As a minority myself, I know kids – especially those at the urban core – face challenges that others may never have experienced. I try to be involved in organizations that support them and show them there are other avenues to be successful – not just athletics or entertainment. Seeing business professionals like themselves really resonates with these kids.
Every day, I ask businesses for time. I ask them to consider making a change and to trust us to represent them in the insurance market. I can show them clearly what they can save in dollars and cents. Now, convincing someone to invest in people is a more challenging task. But Big Brothers Big Sisters is so reputable, and the results are truly clear. The return on investment is real for these kids and for our community.
I feel fortunate that I’m part of The Miller Group, which is dedicated to giving back, with a mission of serving God, Family and Community. The company’s support of this fundraiser is another example of that.
I moved from Wichita to KC four years ago, and as I have become more involved, I have fallen more in love with this city than I ever imagined. I want it to grow and be successful, and that’s why I’m passionate about this cause.
