Reminder for Self-insured Plans: PCORI Fee Due July 31

Once again this year, employers with self-insured health plans are required to pay the ACA tax known as the PCORI fee. For many plans, this will be the last year they have to pay. Here’s a quick rundown of what you need to know in preparing to pay the fee this year:

  • The fee applies to self-insured employers with plan years that started between February 1, 2017 and January 1, 2018. For fully insured plans, the carriers have already built the fee into your rates.
  • The dollar amount owed per covered life in 2019 depends on the start date of the plan year.
          • For plan years starting between February 1, 2017 and October 1, 2017, the fee is $2.39 per covered life.
          • For plan years starting between November 1, 2017 and January 1, 2018, the fee is $2.45 per covered life.
  • Some self-insured employers will have to pay the PCORI fee again in July of 2020, while others will not.
          • For plan years starting between February 1, 2018 and October 1, 2018, the 2020 fee will be $2.45 per covered life.
          • For plan years starting on or after November 1, 2018, there are no more PCORI fees.
